Frank Fridays: Rogue Status – Venice, CA

If you’ve ever watch Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory on MTV, chances are you’ve seen him wearing some t-shirts from Los Angeles-based Rogue Status. Originally founded by snowboarder/skaters/sneaker heads Jo Esbensen, Jasper Watts, and Rex Hollway, the brand got a huge boost when Dyrdek and Famous Stars and Straps founder and Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker signed on as partners. Soon after, the Rogue Status crew opened a flagship store on Main Street in Venice, CA, proudly reppin' AWOL status all day everyday.

After starting out small the brand, quickly gained notoriety with their infamous Gun Show Print, voted #9 by Complex Magazine’s Top 100 T-Shirts of the 2000s. Today the Easy Company boys have their hand in everything from snowboard clothing to a full-blown motor sports division, and have become fixtures in the Gumball 3000 rallies.

If you stop by the store on any given day, you’ll likely find the crew posted up on the bench outside, skating around and soaking up the SoCal sunshine. With the brand new beachfront Venice skatepark just a couple blocks away, this little zone of is quickly becoming the heart and soul of the Venice lifestyle.

What To Do: The Misfits On Tour
Halloween might be over, that doesn't mean you can't still add a little horror to your life. The Misfits will strike Pomona, CA's Galaxy Concert Theatre this Friday with a sonic smack-down. Despite a constantly revolving lineup, the Misfits have remained ever-present and influential to the punk rock and heavy metal scene. Active since the late 70's, their signature sound combines shredding steel, driving drum beats, and horror movie-esque bravado to create a show as much about the sight as it is about the sound.

Club Hoppin': Beta

There are all kinds of so called “high-profile” clubs around the country. Most of them will have you wait outside the velvet rope for an hour only to have the juiced-up doorman critique your wardrobe, then the snotty guest list girl wearing too much make up will act more important than she really is, and finally the wanna-be actress/model (bitter waitress) will take your all money for overpriced bottle service. Beta in Denver, CO is not one of these clubs.
Created by the music fiends over at beatport.com just over a year ago, Beta is quickly gaining a reputation with DJs as one of the best nightclubs in the country. In fact, it’s the only club in North America with the new FUNKTION-ONE Dance Array 4 Speaker Stack System, and even hired an acoustical engineer to maximize sonic purity. The design is futuristic and classy without the pompous attitude, the bartenders are hot and the door guys welcome all types—from the hair-gelled Ed Hardys to the sneakers and jeans raver kids.

“Can you believe the sound in this place? WOW! Not to mention, the people are great looking and ready to dance and paaaarty! My new favorite club in the world, hands down.”—Bad Boy Bill.
While hosting some of the world’s best DJs like Bad Boy Bill and DJ Z Trip, Beta also has a great resident line up, including LikeMe Local Guest Recommender DJ Klaw on Noise Fridays. Beta’s also kept up with the times by going green, featuring water efficient bathrooms, flyers printed on recycled paper with vegetable oil based inks, recycled elements (acoustic panels made from recycled jeans) and re-used elements like re-upholstered existing furniture with recycled fabric throughout the club.

If you’ve been to Beta, write an inside word and let us know what you think, or if you haven’t, put it on your “To Do” list for the next time you’re in town. Don’t trust us, trust Z Trip:
“The sound system will melt your face!” —DJ Z Trip.
In honor of all who love Beta, they are throwing a LikeMe.Net Appreciation Party on Saturday, November 28th where they will be comping entry to all LikeMe users who recommend Beta. Featuring Resident DJ Jonas Tempel and special guest DJ Danny - check out these DJ's favorites and follow their recommendations. See you at the party!

Local Guest Recommender: Vanessa Barcus
Yes, there are a lot of celebrities on LikeMe, but some of our most popular recommenders are the up and coming local heroes who are making a name for themselves. Such is the case with Vanessa Barcus, one of the co-owners of the online boutique www.ShopGoldyn.com. Whether she's putting on a fashion show in Denver's developing design district, or checking out one of the city's many live music venues, Vanessa's always got something good to share with her LikeMe followers.
"I spend most of my free time seeing live music, scoping out the latest and greatest restaurants and bars, and generally just spending time with my amazing friends," says Vanessa. "As a lover of music, culture, and the arts, new trends from these fields are always influencing both my work and private life. It's always fascinating to see how different industries, artists, cities, and people influence each other...and I love being at the intersection of it all!"
Remember you can follow Vanessa's recommendations for the inside word on Denver, even if you're not really a "local". Local Guest Recommenders are a great way to find out more about a city you're interested in.

Reasons to Roll: Santa Monica Pier

If you're in Los Angeles and you need a little break from the fast lane, check out the Santa Monica Pier for a mini vacation. Give yourself at least an hour to enjoy the people watching and walk the entire length of the pier. Even a quick stop on your lunch break works!

Start by checking out the boardwalk area where you can scope some beach bodies on the volleyball courts and at the beach gym. From there, cruise down the pier and hit some of the vendor stands where you can buy Ed Hardy knock-offs, get a clay molded sculpture of your face, enroll in the trapeze school, take a pic with celebrity card board cutouts and get your name drawn on a piece of rice.

There are plenty of telescopes lining the pier to spy on the beautiful Malibu beach homes and stop at a couple benches along the way to sit and soak-in your mini vacation.

Expect to see families and if you are up for it, jump on the roller coaster at the Pacific Park Family Amusement Park or hit the arcade for a couple games. When you see the seagulls flocking, you know you are nearing the end of the pier where the fisherman clean their catch and the breeze is strong.

Westword Wednesday: Cheeky Monk
By Jason Sheehan. Photo by Mark Manger.
The first time I saw the Cheeky Monk, I thought to myself, "Well, that's going to last about five minutes." An upscale Belgian beer cafe on one of the weirdest, wildest stretches of Colfax? It would be a nice idea somewhere else — like, say, Portland or Antwerp. But as I walked on past the Cheeky Monk, I saw an intemperate fella asleep in the back booth of the Roslyn, his T-shirt riding up over his enormous white belly, then almost got hit by a cop car screeching around the corner in pursuit of ghosts. I figured I could probably make a nice nickel or two laying down a death-pool bet on how long this Monk was going to last. Ten minutes seemed like a safe bet, but I would've been willing to go down to five if the odds were right.
That was two years ago...

In the Mix: Shawn Edwards

If you’re a fan of everything Hollywood, make sure and check out Local Guest Recommender Shawn Edwards. As a film critic for Kansas City’s Fox 4 News, Shawn keeps their website fresh with movie reviews, twitter feeds, daily news, video clips, photo galleries and more.
As Shawn puts it, "I'm a living episode of 'Entourage.' Whether I'm in Kansas City, LA, New York or London, I'm on the go and everything I do is entertainment oriented. Whether I'm covering a movie, or watching a movie, or listening to music, or tracking a band to see if they're going to be hot, or trying to find some spot to find some cool gear to wear, or looking for some hip art, hanging out with my friends, looking for the next great party, looking for the next great concert, drinking, eating, in between trying to work out a little bit, always on the go, not really concerned about sleep, slinging Red Bull and Twizzlers and living life to the fullest!"
And of course his LikeMe profile gives you insider information on some his favorite places to eat, drink and play when he’s out getting the latest scoop in the world of entertainment.

Movie Time: Sailor Jerry's Hori Smoku

Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry is a feature length documentary exploring the roots of American tattooing through the life of its most iconoclastic figure, Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins. Through rare interviews, photographs and hours of archival footage, Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry: The Life and Times of Norman Keith Collins, explores the past, present and future of the global tattooing phenomenon.

Watering Holes: Sluggers in Seattle, WA

By Mike Seely
Back when it was called Sneakers, Sluggers was purely a baseball bar (even though, ironically, the name Sluggers is more specific to baseball than Sneakers). There were—and still are, to some extent—framed, autographed photos of Mariners past and present on just about every available inch of wall, and the double-decker bar was a favored watering hole for players such as Mickey Brantley, Richie Zisk, and Cuffs Caudill. Now some of that wall space has given way to Seahawk portraits, and it's only a matter of time before Sounders memorabilia is squeezed in as well, as the expansion franchise's arrival at Qwest has greatly enriched the coffers of its narrow little neighbor. The fact that Sluggers' appeal is more versatile these days is fitting; there are so many television sets in the place that there aren't nearly enough baseball games on at any given time to fill them all. But soccer and baseball combined? Sure—and Sluggers admirably refuses to engage in the sort of price-gouging that some other nearby establishments shamelessly participate in.
From Seattle Weekly’s “Best of 2009”, voted Best Watering Hole before a Mariner, Seahawk, or Sounder Game.
Check out Sluggers on LikeMe to recommend, write your own inside word or add to your “To Do” list for the next time you’re in Seattle.

DJ Z-Trip's Ride To Revolution

It always nice to see credit given where it’s due, and in DJ Z-Trip’s case, 2009 couldn’t have been more reaffirming. First he was approached by the developers of Activision’s DJ Hero video game (released in October) to create 3 exclusive tracks and consult on the game’s playability and design. He ended up as one of the game's characters, and was even featured in a promo spot that aired during the 7th inning stretch of this year’s World Series! Then came the announcement that he had won the title of America’s Best DJ in a 6-month long online vote and 25 city nationwide tour held by DJ Times, the premier magazine for professional DJs. Paul Oakenfold presented him with the award (VIDEO HERE) and afterward the two celebrated by performing side-by-side. To top it all off, the high profile Las Vegas night club Rain at the Palms enlisted Z-Trip to take over the Saturday night slot left open by the late great DJ AM.

It’s not an easy thing to do, as DJ AM was loved and is missed by not only his fellow DJs like Z-Trip, but countless faithful partygoers. In a recent story on MTV.com, he expressed his concern over the subject, stating, “I want people to understand that I'm not filling his spot or his shoes…There's no replacement for that person.” Dubbed "Z-Trip's Revolution", the weekly party also features artwork created exclusively for the club by Z-Trip’s close friend and sometimes touring partner Shepard Fairey, most well known for his 2008 "Hope" poster of Barack Obama. Randall Roberts from the LA Weekly was on hand for the opening last month and had the opportunity to battle Z-Trip in his hotel room one-on-one before the actual release of DJ Hero.
Z Trip also got the chance to go snowboarding this summer down in Argentina with South America Snow Sessions. After his first time on the hill last winter, he immediately got addicted and is ready to get busy on the snow this season. He even used snowboarding for inspiration while creating some of his music for DJ Hero.
"The one that I came up with on the mountain was the concept of trying to go for sort of...for lack of a better term, the DJ Hero theme song," he explains. "I ended up structuring something and pulling it all together, and they had to sort of go out of their way a little bit to make it happen, but the end result is probably some of the best work I've done in a while. So I'm stoked to have that on it."
Congratulations to LikeMe’s Guest Recommender DJ Z-Trip on a great year and continued success in 2010. Be sure and follow Z-Trip to learn about his personal recommendations on his favorite places to eat, drink and play.

Oakley Factory Tour With Bob Burnquist

Oakley Headquarters in Southern California was the site of the latest Frank151 + LikeMe Launch Contest giveaway last week, as our winner and new LikeMe user Bret Price and his buddy met up with Oakley pro skater and 15-time X Games medalist Bob Burnquist for a private tour and autographed Oakley prize pack. Oakley led us deep into the heart of the factory to check out all the behind the scenes action at the massive compound. We checked out the design department, the manufacturing facilities, the on-site museum and even Oakley's private theater to watch Bob's new part in the Flip video Extremely Sorry.

After the movie Bob personally autographed some of his new Flip pro models decks made entirely of bamboo. Bob is well known for being a champion of the environment, creating the Bob Burnquist Foundation to bring knowledge about organic farming and gardening to schools, and is one of the founders of the Action Sports Environmental Coalition, a nonprofit organization that brings ecological awareness to the community. He even signed a few pairs of his Signature Series Recycled Gascans and presented them to our winners! You can read the whole story and check out more photos at Frank151.com.
Special thanks go out to Oakley, Bob Burnquist, Dylan Radloff, Eric our Tour Guide, Digby, Jason and everyone else that help make this possible. For a chance to win your very own grand prize experience, just go to The Launch Landing Page and FOLLOW the sign-up instructions. Remember, we're giving away 151 prizes, so even if you don't live near one of the Grand Prize cities, you can still win tons of other stuff like Vans sneakers and snowboard boots, 686 Outerwear, Clothing from Rogue Status and Akomplice, a signed photograph from Ricky Powell, signed copies of CDs from Redman, Santigold, Trouble Andrew, UGOD and Grand Puba, FDL New Era™ hats, a Frank’s Chop Shop skate deck, a $100 shopping spree on Frank151.com, a lifetime subscription to Frank151 Magazine, a VIP Chop Shop spa treatment and much more.
