The Globe
Athens, GAEsquire's "Best Bar in America" 2007
Some place in Miami has booted The Globe to #2. But remaining in the Top 5 means something.
The bar opened my junior year at the University of Georgia and I counted the days until I was 21 and able to spend many, many hours there. In 1991, this was one of the few places to get a Black & Tan. And consume it in a rocking chair. Surrounded by people who loved, and not lived on, beer.
Glad to see that it's still strong. Yet another reason to attend a reunion, or maybe just a football game.
Mijita
San Francisco, CACarnitas Tacos
'nuff said.
You're a celebrity chef. What do you do when you can do anything you want? Open a restaurant that serves your grandmother's recipes. If your mouth isn't watering, then go to any other taqueria.
Fresh Air Bar-B-Que
Jackson, GADon't miss the Brunswick Stew
The Jackson location, literally located in a wide spot on a two-lane highway between two rural Georgia towns, was on the way to my Grandparents house. We'd go drive down to Macon from Atlanta for long Saturdays at their place, making sure to stop at Fresh Air to pick up lunch.
This is still how I judge pulled pork. And their Brunswick Stew (which I don't THINK has the traditional squirrel meat) is out of this world. I can almost make it (after my aunt reversed engineered a recipe over 10+ years of effort), but nothing beats the smokehouse with the gravel parking lot (seemingly) in the middle of the Georgia pines.
ps - There is also an official location in Macon, GA and "licensed" locations in Athens which are almost as good and a little easier to get to.
