About ToddM

Howdee? Yeah so, I just moved here to start my new business. I lived in Venice for 8 years and am California born as well as my pappy and grandpappy. Kinda rare these days. I have traveled all over the world, lived all over the country and am always up for learning about new people and places. I love the ocean, dogs, archery the geetar and am a big supporter of living life to the fullest. Not just me...you too.

La Fiesta Brava

Venice, CA
El Buen Sabor

This joint is attached to a carneceria on Rose in a hoody part of Venice just before you get to main coming from Lincoln. It has one of those, "leave the door open but can't pull off a home invasion" screen doors on the front and inside has 10 tables a cooler full of drinks from both north and south of the border. On the walls are old bullfighting posters and Winchesters so rusted they almost look like pirate booty. You can see the kitchen and have to walk through it to get to the can.
THE GOOD PART is the chow. MAN is this place good. They have a simple menu of mariscos and northern Mexican favorites but, I recommend the carnitas tacos. Full on tradish with soft corn tortillas, cilantro, and a little salsa fresca. If you are looking for cheese, lettuce, fiesta sauce and more cheese, make a run for the border. If you want the real thing, fast and shockingly cheap, hit up La Fiesta Brava. No WAY you can be disappointed. One of Venice's best secrets. For now.

Too good to last?

So, this place might seem out of place on La Cienega but, believe me, it has a place in my heart...and stomach. It feels like you are walking in to one of those great National Park Lodges when you walk in even though, for a restaurant in the area, it is mid size to cozy. They have you wait in their deluxe bar while they get the table ready. In the bar they not only mix stiffies, but they also have huge martini glasses filled with home-roasted and seasoned almonds you could eat with a chinese soup spoon they are so good and rich. But it doesn't stop there: On the bar they have big goblets full of crispy thick bacon. You just get to eat it. Just for being there. I thought I was dreaming when the bartender said "you guys want more bacon? You look like you could use some more bacon" and just filled up the cup.
Then, you sit down and the menu is corpulent with all kinds of meats. Whatever you like and whatever comes from a cow, I bet they have it and have it in exquisite form. Not only is the menu more than satisfying, but also they have nightly specials which include a huge selection of bone-in cuts as well as some fish and desserts. Oh man, writing this makes me want to go there and eat big.
It does cost a fer piece and also, doesn't seem to be the most popular place on the block but, I still HIGHLY recommend it. Especially if someone you know wants a steak and likes bacon and almonds too!
Don't get me wrong, it was 9/10ths full when we were there but, I think the price and lack of something tofu keeps the average scenester away. Just means more for us!!!
