Mid Del Taco Inc

It used to be just Del Taco, but then the California Company of the same name copyrighted the name, so the second owners changed it to Mid Del Taco.
This small restaurant in Del City, about 10 tables, has been serving the same great recipes since I was in High School just down the street (35 years ago). I was shocked and VERY pleased when I returned the first time after 20 years. The food is the same as it was then and they even have an all you can eat menu. I sure am glad they did not when I was in school, I would have been the entire offensive line my senior year. Several years ago, a couple of the families of people I went to school with bought it. They even bought the recipes. They are still a secret and no one will talk, believe me I tried. I would love to open one in Austin. Nevertheless, until then I just make the trip twice a year.
It is now the gathering place for friends and family when I visit; we take over the place and eat until we are almost comatose, and then tip out the staff for putting up with us and we try to warn them of the next get together. Last time I went back I pre ordered 36 combo beef and bean burritos. They froze them, tossed in a quart of their sauce and I brought them back to Austin . . . Euphoric for the next 12 weeks to say the least, although I always run out of the sauce before I eat all of the burritos.
I do have to admit that the new Taco Bueno that opened in south Austin (Slaughter & Mopac) is close in the flavor of the ground beef and the taco sauce. So I get my in between fixes there. It is worth the drive also and a lot closer.

This is one of 5 restaurant locations in Austin and Round Rock. They are a 30 year old company and one of the top 5 off premise caterers in Central Texas. I have actually been to an event at the State Capitol for over 5k HUNGRY people and the managers and staff handled it like it was 500 people. Plenty of food and the meat was cut for each guest as they came through. Gallons and Gallons of sweet and unsweet tea and pink lemonade. Fresh homemade potato salad and ranch style pinto beans, Their own lable BBQ sauce, both regular and spicy, pickles, onions and jalapenos (this is Texas) and 2 kinds of bread. Their staff stayed busy keeping the food bowls full and trash picked up. I am pretty sure that after 30 years they have it down pretty good and they even do specialty menus for wedding all over the Central Texas area from Ft, Hood to San Antonio.

It has been a couple of years but the food is or was pretty good, their "platters" have a hefty protion and the fajitas are some of the best I have ever had. I like the chips, cheese and salsa delivered at no charge if you order from the menu.
James, the owner is an old drummer from the 50's & 60's Southern Gentlemen and is a blast to hang with.
I am hoping that it is still there and still serving up the same great fajitas and margaritas (hand mixed) when I go through there this fall. I have yet to find Tex Mex in Austin that compares.
