Barbrix
Los Angeles, CAOh, yum!
This lively new wine bar in Silver Lake serves some seriously delicious small tastes. We had the skirt steak with wild arugula and parmegiano-reggiano, fig salad with goat cheese, crispy polenta with mushrooms and creamy gorgonzola, and crostini misti. The desserts tend to be spicy surprises, not too sweet. It's all astonishingly affordable for such refined fare, as is the wine -- $10 max a glass. Nice atmosphere -- comfy hip -- patio seating available -- friendly wait staff. I'm definitely goin' back for more tastes.
Good
New York, NYGood, Better, Best
On a recent trip to New York, had a fabulous breakfast at this charming West Village yummorama -- generous portions of perfectly cooked eggs, sausages, and pancakes to die for. It's definitely on my list to check out the lunch and dinner fare at this new venture for chef Steve Picker, who cut his teeth at the 4-star Le Bernardin.
Tender Greens
Culver City, CAYummy casual
In the midst of increasingly upscale Culver City, Tender Greens is a sweet little affordable oasis of super yummy, healthy food. You order your food at a counter, and if there's a line -- as there was for lunch this Saturday -- don't worry; it moves fast. A lot of folks are ordering the food to go; so it's easy to find a table. I had a moist and tender chicken breast salad with peas, fava beans, and the faintest touch of mint; my companion inhaled his albacore salad with mashed potatoes like there was no tomorrow. I understood completely; the mashed potatoes were to die for. They serve soups with no dairy and hot dishes, too. A big public parking lot is just north of the restaurant on Winnetka.
La Playa Hotel & Cottages
Carmel, CASpanish Charm by the Sea
This is a great hotel for a romantic getaway or a well-serviced conference. The grounds are lush and lovely, the staff helpful, the prices reasonable, and the locale ideal -- just a few blocks from the sea. Request an ocean view room and fall asleep to the soothing sounds of waves breaking the shore. The beach is terrific -- soft sand and turquoise water. And the surrounding neighborhood is great to walk around, with some of the most charming homes you can imagine. But hold onto your wallet: Carmel's tempting arts and clothing shops are just a few blocks away.
Cantinetta Luca
Carmel By The Sea, CAWhat's Italian for Yummy?!!
Had to go back to Luca for a second lunch on my trip to Carmel this past weekend. Its beautiful and serene interior is more than matched by the warm and helpful wait staff and simple, but elegant Italian cuisine. The Zuppa Valdostana -- with savoy cabbage, smoked ham, rye bread, and fontina cheese -- ain't your typical cabbage soup. More like something fit for the gods.
