Wilson Food & Wine
Culver City, CALooking for a tapas menu?
Good food in a fun atmosphere. What I really like about this place is that I can dine tapas style or choose an entree. I tend to order a few small plates, and share an entree so there's plenty of food and variety. I can personally vouch for the charred octopus salad, the slow roasted pork, the fig salad, the sea bass, the pumpkin tortellini, and the gnocchi with wild boar ragu. All very tasty!!!
Newcombs Ranch Inn
La Canada Fltrdg, CABiker Haven up the Angeles Crest
Newcomb’s Ranch is a super-cool biker's oasis located about 40 or so miles up one of the most popular motorcycle routes in the world, the Angeles Crest Highway. It’s a rustic, road-side cafe that’s been there for years and years. The food is decent (Sunday bbq is pretty good, as are their burgers and fries), the service is great, and the place is always packed with bikers but you don’t have to be a biker to enjoy it. Take half a day and head up the Crest to see what I'm talking about. It’s high up in the mountains, away from the traffic and smog, and the drive is amazing.
Mitsuwa Marketplace
Los Angeles, CAKimchee ramen... mmmm good!
This place is great! There are actually several restaurants situated inside the supermarket like a food court. They serve great ramen, soba and udon. You can also buy a heated toilet seat cover with a bidet function, the ultimate rice cooker, or even a Hello Kitty towel set. In the grocery store, there’s an excellent selection of sake and I think I’ve tried nearly all of them. So far, Ginga’s the best.
Nyala Ethiopian Cuisine
Los Angeles, CAYummy food that's okay to eat with your hands
I like to order the combo meat platter of lamb and beef, and the combo vegetarian platter. I also really like the honey wine... a lot. And, I mean a whole lot. Anyway, the atmosphere is very casual, fun and friendly with tons of laughing.
Twentynine Palms Inn
Twentynine Palms, CAJoshua Tree Oasis
This is a very cool and bizarre place, and the perfect base for exploring Joshua Tree. The inn was built around a California fan palm oasis in 1928. They grow their own organic vegetables and only serve homemade bread. I’ve stayed in the Apache Plume, Dandelion and Hyacinth adobe bungalows, which are rough around the edges but super comfortable. The small patio areas are great for stargazing... you really are in the middle of wildlife which can be heard across the desert plains at night. In other words, if you bring your Chihuahua don’t let it stray too far.
