Ra Sushi
Houston, TXYoung & the Restless
Fun place to people watch, eat, drink and pretend you're in LA; as a giant glass window retracts, Ra suddenly becomes an open-air party environment, overlooking the palm-lined stretch of Westheimer that is Highland Village.
Vieng Thai 2000
Houston, TXcheap and firey and just perfect
Long Point is one of the most ethnic streets in Houston and a real treat to drive down, the eastern part more Latino while the western part is heavily Korean. Vieng Thai is one of the 3 best Thai places in the city because they don't dumb down the food for American palates, and therefore have gained a wide array of customers, from Memorialites slumming it (they used to visit Otilia's up the street before it went blandly pedestrian!) to Thai students etc. Try the larb or spicy eggplant, or the pork belly with green beans. And BYOB. Catch a movie a few blocks away at Edwards on Silber.
Polonia
Houston, TXWhen I'm missing Chicago....
I head to Polonia, a carnivore's dream of a restaurant and attached deli, serving all sorts and shapes of sausages. Kraut, giant pork knuckle, pierogi and bigos are my faves....and hot donuts on sundays. Pilsner Urquell on tap and Polish satellite TV with emphasis on soccer. Sunday gets the Polish community in as the Polish church is a few blocks away....fun!
Pierson & Co BBQ
Houston, TXEau de Mesquite
Great smoky BBQ, both pork and beef, spicy beans and dark mysterious sauce....and a very nice family serving it all up....closed Mondays.

Under the Volcano
Houston, TXUnder the Volcano
That's the name, and the book is enshrined inside, and that tells you what you need to know. Place feels like it should be on a Cuban hillside overlooking the sea....so yeah, have a mojito (or julep) and kick back.
