House of Nanking
San Francisco, CAReminds me of Soup Nazi for Chinese
A friend took me to this excellent restaurant last month when I was in town. You may wait in line to get in and will sit at tables with others most of the time. The wait staff will take your order as fast as you can give it too them and will bring it too you almost as fast.
The Chinese is top notch but don't go for the dining experience or to make an evening of it.
The Grove
Houston, TXThe Grove won't be hidden for long
The Grove is the new Schiller-Delgrande restaurant in the grove of treesin Houston's newest downtown park. The art is from an ex-chef....undiscovered but chic impressionist. Food is very Delgrande. Lot's of simply grilled with good wine pairings. One portion of the menu allows you to pick the type of meat/seafood, grill type, vegs and sauce. Wall to wall windows and upstairs is a huge redwood deck looking out on downtown Houston. Lonnie Schiller has outdone himself on this one.
Sibling Rivalry
Boston, MAKiller fun on the menu
Sibling Rivalry is one of two sister (really brother) restaurants. The two chefs split time between Boston and DC. Each night the menu has three columns on two pages. The middle column states the food item (veal, crab, mushrooms, etc.), brother 1 takes the left column and brother 2 takes the right column. One brother will have it as an appetizer and one as the main course. While rivalry is the theme, each dish comes out as if one brother is trying to convince you he is better than the other. We usually make sure the table keeps an even set of picks and send in our score afterwards.
Via Matta
Boston, MAOne of my two favorite Italian restaurants
I have a constant argument (that is over as soon as my pal moves to Italian from English) over whether or not this is the best Italian restaurant in the country. My perfect restaurant is where I never have to look at a menu and always have the best meal I have ever had. Via Matta is a short walk from Copley Plaza in Boston. It handles a very large but always comfortably packed crowd most nights. There are a few precious tables outside worth getting if it's nice out. Great variety on the menu for light or heavy eating. I'd recommend telling the waiter what you generally like and don't like and how many courses you want. The chef loves this and will take it as a personal challenge.
