Casa Bonita
Denver, COVerbal Legend
My husband and I were to be visiting Denver last week, but only briefly. We weren't looking for food to compete with Kansas City (I mean, please!) but at least a fun and memorable experience. We had heard from people who'd heard from people this was the place to go. We'd also found a coupon on a visitor's brochure. It was an interesting experience for sure but the yummiest things in the place were the young, buff cliff divers :-) Followed by the most delicious, warm, pillowy, sweet sopapillas you will EVER taste. My husband got the all-you-can-eat dinner and he was very satisfied. (The cliff divers obviously weren't HIS favorite). Overall, it was a great experience
Eli's Cheesecake World
Chicago, ILOut of this world cheesecake
When I picked up an individually packaged slice of this cheesecake at the grocery store, I didn't have high expectations - just wanted something sweet for after dinner. I forget the exact flavor, but I do remember it was a brownie bottom cheesecake and it knocked my socks off! Now they even sell it at the gas station here in Kansas City. Then, on a trip to the windy city, I saw Eli's Cheesecake World on a hotel brochure and it was decided. My husband and I got a sandwich there (just a formality because it was lunch time) but we could have sat there until closing time just sampling all the decadent varieties. Next time you're in Chicago, check it out - or look for it at your local gas station.
Ponak's Mexican Kitchen
Kansas City, MOKC's best margarita - HANDS DOWN
I won't order a margarita anywhere else! I had kind of written off the food for awhile, however, my recent experience has me reconsidering. My husband had Carne con Chili (not chili con carne?) "A bowl of chunks of choice pork on a bed of frijoles. Your choice of flour or corn tortillas." As a vegetarian, I always appreciate a good chili relleno. Theirs was not stellar but above average for sure. But back to the margaritas. If you have a DD and want to get straight to the point instead of paying $5 a pop for some watered down martini elsewhere, I suggest getting a half pitcher at Ponak's with a tall straw. For $14.50, I guarantee a more than healthy buzz :-) (Results may vary but I'm not a small girl or a beginner and I usually need to be carried out)
Garozzo's Ristorante
Kansas City, MOWant authentic Italian-American cuisine and atmosphere? The original Garozzo's is the place to go. Located in Kansas City's North end, and not too far from the City Market, it is one of the last remnants of Kansas City's "Little Italy". The atmosphere is almost as delicious as the food. Chicken spiedini is always a good bet, but I reccomend trying something new. A lot of really good food on Garozzo's menu is simply overlooked. If it's a lot of food you're after, go for the pasta 3-way. I've seen a big man go after this mountain of penne, ravioli & spaghetti (thus "3-way") topped off with a giant meatball, and walk away defeated. Still, everyone wins because you will take home about 6 pounds of leftovers! But for starters, you absolutely MUST have a stuffed artichoke - 2 or 3 people can share. It is a tender artichoke stuffed with butter and Italian bread crumbs and baked - don't forget the heart - it's the best part. Garozzo's also has an extensive wine list as well as a house wine specially made for the restaurant. Make your way down their soon, whether it be for a special occasion or just a casual dinner. You can now make your reservations online.
Succotash
Kansas City, MOI just had one of the best meals of my life at this place! I've always heard good things about this city market fixture, and they were all true. I was tempted by big hunks of french toast with bananas and carmel sauce but since it was a warm afternoon, I went for the quesadilla veggie wrap. It was a spinach tortilla stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes and warm, gooey goat cheese. It was topped off with their signature "succotash" and spring greens and served with a generous side of fried potatoes. Other things on the menu included a monte christo, scrambed eggs and bacon and a good list of freshly juiced drinks with things like ginger, cucumber, parsley, and the usual apple and orange. If you haven't been there yet, drop everything and get there. The prices are extremely reasonable too.
