Kansas City, MOStrangely delicious
The powdered cheese (I'm pretty sure identical to the powdery stuff that comes in Mac and Cheese boxes) adds an odd twist, but what really sets these apart is the fact that you know you are going to hell for eating them, but you do anyway. Meat that tastes similar to Taco John's, mixed with pinto beans, lettuce, and powdery cheese, all stuffed within a fried corn tortilla (and by fried I mean deep fat fried). Crunchy on the outside, soft and greasy on the inside, these would be a great way to fend off or mend a hangover.
One 80
Kansas City, MOAstoundingly Bad.
I wouldn't recommend really anything here. When we were seated we were greeted by a friendly server and we ordered drinks - a Moscow Mule for me and a Bomb Pop martini for my wife. I think they forgot the alcohol in both of our drinks - mine tasted like watered down ginger ale and hers tasted like Kool-Aid. We wanted to try everything they had, because the menu looked so good, so we ordered several items: the sliders, the carpaccio, the lobster ravioli, and the Gorgonzola cheese fries. The Gorgonzola cheese fries would have been very good if the fries were crispy - they were not. We ultimately had to eat this dish with a fork. All in all, though, a moderately successful dish. The carpaccio was a completely different story; I cannot believe this is even passed off as carpaccio by this restaurant - it is nothing more than rare pieces of roast beef. The flavor was just off-putting, and they dabbed mustard around the plate that made it worse. The only saving grace for this dish was the salad of micro greens that accompanied the carpaccio. Terrible dish. The sliders were also a disaster - they tasted exactly like McDonald's, but on an English Muffin, which basically made them breakfast cheeseburgers from McDonald's. I wouldn't wish these upon my worst enemy. The lobster ravioli was a mixed dish. One bite it seemed OK, and the next quite awkward. The accompanying romescu was good, the breading on the ravioli was well seasoned and crisp, but the flavor I was getting from inside wasn't particularly lobster-y (pardon the expression...), and the bright orange interior only made it worse. We didn't finish this dish either. All in all, one of the worst experiences I've had in a restaurant in Kansas City.
Vivace
Kansas City, MOGreat little spot in the River Market area that would be great for a chill night posted up at the bar and having a cocktail. Good place to chat up the bartender, or your friends. $5 martinis is a good deal, and they certainly know how to make them. The "ice bar" is cheesy and not so much an ice bar, but it does absorb spills quite nicely.
Mc Coy's Public House & Brew
Kansas City, MOOrder the mac and cheese. The beer here is pretty good (I enjoyed the light and the pale, but the raspberry wheat tasted like perfume), and the patio is awesome. Service was great, as well, even though our salad came out with our dinner.
Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant
Kansas City, MOAlthough Raglan Road is in the P&L district, of which I am not a fan, once inside you'll forget it. The architecture and design of this place makes it obvious that the owners spared no expense. A sprawling bar covers an entire side of the restaurant, with bar tables spread throughout the very spacious bar area. We split an appetizer, an entree, and a side - the scallops (deep fried), a strip steak with a red wine reduction, and the mashed potatoes. The scallops were perfectly cooked, and I don't often say that. More often than not I have to complain of overcooked, spongy scallops, and these were not. The breading was not necessary, however, and we ended up peeling most of it off. The steak was, again, cooked to order, at a perfect medium-rare. The sauce was just OK, but the flavor of the meat definitely made up for it. The mashed potatoes were bland and dry as could be, so we left most of them.
The major drawback here is that the drinks are expensive, as with any place in the P&L district, and fairly weak. I would certainly recommend Raglan Road for dinner, but I'd move on to a different area for drinks. A second visit proved extremely entertaining, with an Irish band getting the crowd riled up. I stuck to beer and this place was great. Get there early if you want a table.
