SmashBurger
Golden Valley, MNNew take on burgers
I don't know if it was just me, but SmashBurger feels like a Chipotle of burger joints. You don't watch the staff make your burger but the atmosphere feels like the same place. The quality and taste is superior to a McDonald's or Wendy's. Will it SMASH the competition. Sadly, no.
Whitey's World Famous Saloon
Minneapolis, MNYou never know what you are going to get
I've always had great food at Whitey's; however, I think I've always stuck with the chicken breast sandwhich. I have a friend that swears they make a great grilled cheese sandwhich. I don't know why a person would ever pay for a grilled cheese sandwhich.
Service can be a hit or a miss.
Restroom are not the best. They have a troft in the men's room, which is funny. It looks like a two person only troft. Why would someone pee so close and intimately with another guy? They might as well just made it a urinal.
Whitey's is a good place to hang with friends. I do not suggest taking a date to Whitey's.
Emily's Bakery & Deli
Hastings, MNOnce the home of the Cherry Chip Cookie
OMGx10! This place made the best Cherry Chip cookie in the world. I loved them as a child until my late twenties. Even when I moved from Hastings, I continued to stop in and buy a dozen or so Cherry Chip cookies. Sadly, they stopped making them and my taste buds will no longer know the sweet goodness of an Emily's Bakery Cheery Chip cookie.
On another note, they still make the best doughnuts that I have ever tasted. I recommend ordering a Long John. When you're there, tell them to bring back the Cherry Chip cookie!
St James Hotel
Red Wing, MNExcellent Sunday Brunch
I used to celebrate every Easter Sunday at the St. James Hotel with my family. We would all eat from their large, delicious buffet; while enjoying the view of the Mississippi River.
Lush
Minneapolis, MNJust how LUSHious is Lush?
Lush is certainly unlike any other gay bar in the Twin Cities.
It's nicely located next to Tickels in Northeast Minneapolis. This gives its patrons an option to bar hop back and forth.
Lush certainly has character, and it stand out with it's large glass windows; which were once garage doors.
Ok, I could go on and on but I am not getting paid for this. Here's a fast run down of the good & bad.
Good:
High ceilings, large, garage stall, windows (plus one totally open up).
The VIP area - This area has potential and a great view of the main floor.
Game Room - There's a game room in it's own area. Kudos to the brains that came up with this concept unlike all the other gay bars.
Food - I had a few fries which were delicious and a bite of a mini burger which was yummy!
Staff - There was plenty of it, but not much for staff checking on the patrons outside. Plus, why ID at the front door and not the side door?
Liquor - I didn't pay that night, my friends paid for me. I believe $10 gets you three beers before tip.
Bad:
Parking - Some lush is going to drive their car through the glass windows because their parking is do damn close.
Patio - It's a plus, but is certainly on the small side. I would have passed on all the mulch and went with a larger patio. If the owner is willing to upgrade, I would totally bust out a window from the second floor VIP area and add a doorway which leads to a second floor, spacious patio.
Seating - there's not much seating, but maybe after a few weeks, seating will be fine. The large rised area by the dj area is sort of wasted space. Seating would look better in this area.
Restrooms - though very cool and should be a plus, it's a negative because the toilet areas are totally lockable from the inside and you can't see in. Can we say "SEX ROOMS". Lush is better off hiring a bathroom attendant to watch these rooms, or Lush will go from LUSHious to just down right ish!
Over all - It's certainly a new favorite in Minneapolis.
