Braai
New York, NYSouth African for BBQ
Braai literally means BBQ and this place is delicious. I'd never had South African before, but I went with a friend who dated a South African for years. So, she was familiar with the menu and had eaten the home-cooked version of these dishes.
Everything was excellent! The wine was a little pricey. (I was looking at the price for a 1/2 bottle, not a whole one, so when the bill came, there was a little bit of sticker shock.)
I had the special, which when I went was a seaford biryani. Biryani is generally considered to be Indianl, and you do see many of the same spices. But it is done in a more smoky, dry-rubbed sort of way. No heavy coconut sauces here!
And the milk tart (think tres leches with a flaky pie crust on the bottom) was a great way to finish the meal.

I love Intelligentsia! Locally roasted, so yummy. I should start importing it to NYC. I miss it!
Wilfie & Nell
New York, NYA Pub-y Addition
Wilfie & Nell is a welcome new pub in my neighborhood. It's just around the corner from my apartment, and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to catch up with friends.
It is a low-key spot with some classic pub food. This includes a 'scotch egg.' I've yet to try it, but it is supposed to be delish. It isn't for the health conscious! It is a breaded and deep-friend hard boiled egg! Yum.
Elephant Castles
New York, NYElephant & Castle
This is an old-school New York spot. I've been to brunch a couple of times, and it is straight-forward fare. (It's a nice step up from a diner.)
The best thing to order, in my humble opinion, is a cafe au lait and the 'frou-frou'. The frou-frou is a generous, healthy heapin' of greek-style yogurt with fresh fruit and honey. It's such a great way to start your Saturday.
Perilla Restaurant
New York, NYThe Top Chef Winner...
...from the first season opened Perilla. I've been once and I can't wait to go back. The ambiance is subdued, lovely, contemporary -- and so is the food!
I can't recommend it enough. It is tucked down a quiet side street off Bleecker in the Village. I've heard great things about their brunch menu as well.
