Nobu Los Angeles
West Hollywood, CAjapanese gourmet #2
this just happens to be the newest member of the Nobu family, i enjoy the one in Oahu myself but one important aspect of 'chains' is consistency, and Nobu has that. CLEAN japanese food, fresh, and some new techniques too (watermelon caviar w/siracha foam??)
The French Laundry
Yountville, CAperfection
one only needs minimal knowledge in culinary arts to recognize the name Thomas Keller. this could possibly be the best restaurant in the country, let along California. keller's goal has always been to make people understand that eating should be an emotional experience, and his obsessive detail makes it possible. you can't make a suggestion as to what to eat here, you could throw a dart at the menu and chances are it's the best you've ever had...whatever it is.
Sushi Samba Rio
Chicago, ILfresh, believe it or not..
what can i say, you wouldn't think sushi in the midwest could be comparable to that of south pacific islands...wrong. GREAT sushi! the unagi is my personal favorite, or the toro. best spot is the garden/patio out back...
Rockit Bar & Grill
Chicago, ILafter work
great spot to hit after work and kick back. small menu but very good. (try the kobe burger on the pretzel bun, seriously) bit louder and more activity upstairs...music, few pool tables, another bar, etc. another billy D joint....
The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua
Lahaina, HIthe office
my current place of employement. usually you wouldn't consider work fun, but come on...have you seen this place? sits on 50+ acres on the west side of Maui, world class restaurants on site, minutes from some of the best golf in the world, and a stones throw from the sand. see chef ryan at 'The Banyan Tree' restaurant for the best 5 courses you'll ever stuff in your face! tough gig, but someone' gotta do it...:)
