You definitely have to go to Sea World. It’s one of the main attractions the city is known for. It's such a good time for kids and adults.

This is a really great place for anyone and any age. You can do everything from getting in the water to train dolphins to going down a soaking wet roller coaster. There is one thing in common with everything you do there, GET WET, so you might want to wear a bathing suit. Be sure to check out the Shamu(the killer whale) show and if you want to get wet, sit in the Soak Zone. At the end, Shamu will splash the audience from the 1st to the 16th row.
If you want to get in the water with the dolphins you need to call the park at least 3 weeks in advance to make reservations. You will change into a wet suit ahead of time and wade waist deep into the dolphin pool (you don't actually swim with them) but you do feed them, play with them and spend time learning about their training.
If you go to Sea World you might want to stay at the Paradise Point Hotel (check out my recommend under hotels) -- it's only 2 minutes away and you can even see the Sea World fireworks from the hotel.

Male / 47 / Pacific Palisades, CAkeys to enjoying a trip to sea world
if you have kids but not really small kids call to reserve a chance to swim with the dolphins but you usually have to call 3-4 weeks in advance
if you dont plan that far ahead you can schedule usually the day befiore an alternative which is a small group experience 5-6 people where you get to feed and pet the dolphins with a trainer
another key to enjoying your day... if you want to eat at the shipwreck reef cafe which features ribs, bbq chicken hamburgers and hot dogs do not go immediately after the shamu show ends as it is right next door and the restaurant gets swamped by the people exiting the show
