I use the Santa Monica stairs as a great cross trainer for swimming.. It is great because you are outside and it is a fun way of working out..

The first time I did them I could not believe how high my heart rate got and how bad my calves hurt for 3 days!

Tourist, Exhibitionist or Just Healthy

This spot is a trip. Every time I drive by here you see flocks of beautiful people pooled at the bottom of the stairs. Some going up, some going down, some just hanging around. I have no interest in running the stairs, but it's as good a tourist attraction as any in SM.

Kick Your A**...

The "stairs" are cheaper than a gym membership, with more fresh air and much better views. Combine the stairs with some yoga on the grass at the top, a little run up the road and a bike ride along the beach and there's your weekly workout. For free!


Tip: Park on San Vicente past 7th and just walk there...Avoid the crowd by coming late afternoon.

the santa monica stairs are a great place to get a free outdoor workout. there are two set of stairs there. one is concrete and the other is wood. i prefer the wooden stairs since it is easier on my knees. there is nothing better when you don't feel like going to the gym on a beautiful day then working out on the stairs. it will definitely kick your butt!

side note - this place gets busy right after work on a nice day and the santa monica police has been patrolling the area due to people leaving their trash all over the place. so if you go please pick up your trash and take it with you. thanks.

"The Stairs" is a little subculture of its own. It's all about technique and repetition. How many times do you do the stairs? Do you sprint? Skip steps? Sidestep? Then there's the stair etiquette. If you are being slower than the crowd, scoot over to the side!
If you don't know what all the buzz is about yet, come over and try them out. Soon you will be a stairs addict! And maybe a little bit of a stairs snob -- if you can't do at least 8, don't even talk to me.
