Male / Los Angeles, CAThe real Italian!
Bottom line is I don't care what anyone says...this is the best regional Italian in NYC! Chef Frank DeCarlo and staff only cook on open fire and wood..i mean cmon! No gas and no nonsense. This is high-brow Peasant cooking. Not the overpriced American version. Chef is in house everynight; travels to Italy for authentic product and well this is where other chefs go on their one night off. Educated wait staff and a killer wine list.

I've never eaten at the restaurant upstairs, but have become a loyal client of the wine bar in the basement. With a not-too-overwhelming list of Italian Wines, and a knowledgeable staff, I always end up with a delectable drink. Pair it with their meat or cheese platter, and you're in for a treat. They could use a little help with their music selection as it tends to be in the 80s rock collection, and completely clashes with ambience created by the open-flame candles, dark corners, and deep colors.

I love this place because it has great simple dishes with alot of flavor and the atmosphere is wonderful because of the rustic setting and the open kitchen. I know all the waiters and bartenders here and they are such great people. My favorite dishes would have to be the Barbietola(beet salad) and the Gnocchi.Highly recommended!
