Female / Pacific Palisades, CABeautiful aquarium in a nice little town
This was a great trip I took with my boys to visit Monterey's world renown aquarium. The aquarium is beautiful and blends into the old time feel of the town. It is home to many rescued sea otters which they reintroduce to the wild. Fantastic to watch.
If your kids are a little bit older, you can all throw on "dry-suits" with scuba gear. There is a shallow area that butts up outside of the aquarium where you can jump in and explore the sea life first hand. Book this in advance of your trip because the slots get filled up quickly.
We also took a tour of the bay by kayaks (the kids can ride along with you). We were all new at kayaking but found it very simple and fun within the confines of the bay. This was the best way to see Monterey. We paddled out to a sea kelp bed where momma sea otters were floating with babies on their tummys. Seals came up to inspect us as well. It was really beautiful.
One more tip. You might want to read "Cannery Row" -- a classic by John Steinbeck before you go. It describes Monterey in the heyday of its fishing and canning industries.

This is an incredible aquarium and a lovely town. I used to ride my motorcyle down here from SF years ago, and then ventured down coast with my kids when they were big enough to enjoy the site. Unlike other aquariums, you are on the ocean and can look off the balcony to see wild otters at play.
