Times change, but McSorleys never does. Although about 20 years ago they started letting in women (against my wishes).
Not much to decide here as there are only two choices of homemade ale, lite or dark. You should try both, but I'm a fan of the lite. It's the New York version of mothers milk.
If its two people, act like you've been there before and order 8 lites. The small mugs go down quick, so you may even want to order 10.
If you want to sit and drink, the waiters will glady seat you at any open chair. I didn't say table. I said chair. You could end up at a table of strangers, who quickly become friends. It might seem weird at first, but as soon as you order another 8 lites, it all makes sense.
I'm not one for museums, but this place is a living monument to the city of New York. Look around at the old memorabilia on the walls and it's a history lesson through the eyes of this bar. I think Abraham Lincoln drank there. Crazy stuff like that.
The food is cheap and fine after 12 mugs, but just order the cheese plate as it will help you keep drinking. Then when you can barely stand, head across Washington Square Park to Ben's Pizza and life is good.

if you're lucky enough to wrangle a table here, make sure you tip your server well. when you order a round, they come out arms loaded with mugs of light or dark mcsorley's ale. mugs are small but go down fast. be careful, if your server doesn't think you drink fast enough, he may boot you and seat other customers at your table. so drink up, and if you stumble out (watch the step!), you certainly won't be the only one.

McSorley's is the oldest bar in the US, dating from around 1850. It looks it; with the wood floors, sawdust, vintage photos, and miscellanous interesting stuff decorating the walls. You can image the people who have passed through this bar over the years. They only serve 2 beers, light & dark, and they serve them in small 8 oz mugs. Great for a stop to see the place and take in the history; probably not a place where you will spend the evening.
