Crush and Learn

“Remember in middle school when you would send a flower or a candygram to someone? It‘s like that,” explains Casey Cross about LUPEC Denver‘s Crush Party No. 5. Except sub out the awkward adolescence, sterile classrooms and juvenile messages for drunken adulthood, a dark rock club with a dance-party attitude, and everything from serious to silly to sexual missives. Like: “Hey, baby, you‘re looking hot tonight,” suggests Cross, aka Brazen Hussy, LUPEC‘s secretary.
“I got one once that said something about, ’I wanna make you mmm and uhhh,‘” Cross adds. “Mostly it just made me blush.”
The Crush Party concept, like that of its junior-high predecessor, is simple: Buy a handcrafted pin for $2, scribble a shmoopy (or screwy) message to someone else at the party, describe said person to one of the Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails, and wait as the message is delivered. Does sending a crush note guarantee a love connection, or at least a hookup? Maybe not.
“I don‘t know what happens when people leave the party,” admits Cross.
