Just off Coldwater Canyon at Mulholland is a secluded nature retreat millions of mental miles away from the clamor of rush-hour traffic. You may recognize the duck pond, woodland setting and three-acre lake from their starring role as the background on The Andy Griffith Show reruns. With its amphitheater and nature museum, Franklin Canyon Park is a nice day's ideal rural retreat, perfect for bringing the kids.—Molly Lambert

Unlike Runyon which is packed with people looking for a work-out, Franklin Canyon offers a more mellow, "back to nature" space for hiking. It's great for families because you can picnic, stroll around the lake and watch the ducks in the pond without having to break much of a sweat - but if you do want to get some exercise, you can take it a little vertical and see some great views. Fairly easy parking once you're inside the park. Dogs appear to be welcome.

This is a great place to lose the smog, feel like you're in the country (just ten minutes up the hill from Beverly Hills), hike horizontally or vertically, watch ducks, listen to birdcalls, picnic, and smell all the goodness Mother Nature has on offer. If you're not too relaxed, you can zip down afterwards to Il Fornaio on Beverly Drive and return the calories to your thighs with some of their yummy Ciabatta or Pane Rustico.
